The crucial idea most upgrade comparisons miss is that Plus is not a different product. It is the same Shopify with the throttles removed. The features you cannot access on a standard plan are not absent because the technology is different. They are gated because Shopify reserves them for enterprise tier customers.
That gating happens in three places. Capability: things you literally cannot do on standard plans, like fully customise the checkout flow with UI extensions, run multiple stores from one admin, or apply Shopify Functions to custom shipping and discount logic at scale. Limits: API rate limits, staff seat counts, POS Pro locations. Service: a dedicated launch team, a merchant success manager, priority phone and chat support.

At $10M annual revenue, that climbs to $15,000 to $25,000 a month all-in. Most of that is not the platform fee. It is the ecosystem around it.
Hidden costs that catch founders out: third-party apps to fill feature gaps, custom development for integrations, dedicated dev support for theme work, and the migration project itself. A reasonable Plus migration with theme rebuild, ERP integration, and a clean data layer runs $50,000 to $150,000 depending on scope.
The flip side is transaction fee savings. A $10M annual revenue store on Shopify Advanced using a third-party gateway pays roughly $243,000 a year in transaction fees alone at 2.4 percent. The same store on Plus pays about $55,000 all-in, platform plus 0.2 percent transaction fees. At the right scale, Plus is cheaper than not having Plus.
The Real Reasons to Upgrade (And the Marketing Reasons That Are Not)
There are five real reasons to upgrade to Shopify Plus, and two reasons that get pitched a lot but rarely justify the cost on their own.
Checkout customisation. Checkout Extensibility on Plus unlocks UI extensions on every checkout step, the Branding API for pixel-level visual control, and Shopify Functions for custom discount and shipping logic. Stores implementing comprehensive checkout optimisation typically see 15 to 35 percent conversion lift within 60 to 90 days. For high-volume stores, this single feature can justify the upgrade on its own.
B2B at scale. Native B2B is now on every plan, but Plus retains unlimited catalogs, direct catalog-to-location assignment, partial payments, deposits, and advanced B2B checkout customisation. If you have more than 50 wholesale customers with negotiated pricing, or you need NET 60 to NET 90 payment terms with vaulted ACH, you need Plus.
Multi-store. Plus includes up to nine expansion stores at no extra platform cost. If you run separate storefronts for the US, EU, and UK, or you sell under multiple brand names, this alone saves you the cost of running multiple Shopify subscriptions.
Automation through Launchpad and Flow. Launchpad lets you schedule product drops, flash sales, theme changes, and discount activation without manual intervention. For brands that run frequent campaigns across time zones, the operational savings are real, and human error drops to near zero.
API limits and infrastructure. If you run a complex tech stack with multiple ERP, PIM, OMS, or 3PL integrations, the higher rate limits matter. Plus handles flash-sale traffic spikes of 10,000-plus checkouts per minute without breaking.
The two reasons that get oversold: “Plus gives you better SEO” (it does not, the SEO architecture is identical), and “Plus comes with dedicated support that solves everything” (the merchant success manager is useful but is not a replacement for an agency partner or in-house team).
At What Revenue Does Shopify Plus Start Paying for Itself?

Below $80K monthly revenue (around $1M annual), Plus is hard to justify on numbers alone. Above $1M annual, the math turns favourable. Three other thresholds matter just as much: capability (do you need things only Plus can do?), operational complexity (do you need multi-store, advanced B2B, or complex automation?), and infrastructure (are you hitting API or staff seat limits?). Hit two or more of those and the upgrade likely makes sense regardless of revenue.
The simple framework we use with clients: start the Plus conversation if you can answer yes to two or more of the following. Are you above $800K monthly revenue? Do you need checkout customisation beyond what apps can do? Are you adding B2B with more than 50 wholesale customers or NET terms? Are you planning multi-region or multi-brand expansion in the next 12 months?
What Can You Still Do on Standard Shopify Before Needing Plus?
More than most founders realise. Modern standard Shopify supports native B2B (since April 2026), Checkout Extensibility with some restrictions, Shopify Markets for international selling, Shop Pay, Shopify Magic and Sidekick, and the entire app ecosystem. Before upgrading to Plus, most brands can get further than they assume on Advanced at $399 a month, especially with a well-built theme and a focused app stack.
The biggest 2026 shift is the April rollout of native B2B to all plans. Basic, Grow, and Advanced now include company profiles, up to three custom catalogs, volume discounts, quantity rules, vaulted credit cards, and payment terms. For a DTC-first brand adding a small wholesale channel, this means you can launch B2B without Plus.
Shopify Markets covers most international expansion needs on standard plans: localised currencies, languages, payment methods, and shipping zones. Combine that with Shop Pay, which Shopify reports drives up to 50 percent higher conversion than guest checkout, and you have most of the international toolkit Plus used to be required for.
What you cannot do on standard Shopify: fully customise the checkout flow with UI extensions, run multiple stores from one admin, apply unlimited B2B catalogs, or hit Plus-level API rate limits. If none of those are blocking your growth, Advanced is usually the better answer for another 12 to 24 months.
What a Shopify Plus Migration Actually Looks Like
The migration timeline depends on what you are bringing across. Most Plus migrations fall into three shapes. A fast-track migration of two to four weeks for a single store with clean data and no B2B or custom checkout. A standard build of one to two months with a new theme, ERP and WMS integrations, data layer, SEO redirect map, and launch QA. A complex migration of three to six months for Magento or commercetools origins, B2B alongside DTC, multi-region, headless, or multiple back-office integrations.
The single biggest predictor of post-migration performance is whether SEO and data-layer continuity are planned before cutover, not patched after. We have seen brands lose 30 percent of organic traffic for three months because a redirect map was rushed. That is real revenue, and it is preventable.
